Los detalles son los responsables de darle vida y personalidad a un hogar. Pero no por esto vamos a andar comprando veinte-mil porquerías para enganchar por las paredes. Al contrario, queremos simplicidad. Vamos a buscar piezas que sean clave para resaltar el concepto de un espacio definido. Piezas que tengan carácter pero no saturen. El tema de hoy son los estantes.  

When it comes to decorating your home, details are key to giving life and personality to a given space. This is where a lot of people go wrong. They start buying a lot of knick-knacks and end up with a mess. Our goal is to simplify. Lets look for pieces that have enough character to establish a concept but that don’t saturate the room. Today’s theme is shelving.  

Estantes de libros: Este estilo es muy fácil y económico. Puedes utilizar libros viejos o comprar varios en una tienda Salvation Army. La clave es que los libros se vean “vintage”. Se montan encima de pequeños soportes que puedes conseguir en cualquier ferretería o tienda de conveniencia. 

Book shelf, literally: This style is very cheap and easy to make. Pull out some old books or visit any Salvation Army store and pick out books that have that vintage sort of feel. Mount them on small brackets and voila! 

Estante de soga y madera: Instalas dos perchas o ganchos a la pared. En cualquier ferretería, compras y cortas varias maderas del mismo tamaño en la ferretería. Los pedazos sobrantes los cortas en pequeños bloques (pueden ser tamaños desiguales). A las maderas grandes le haces un agujero en cada esquina y a los bloques pequeños, un agujero en el centro. Cuelgas una soga de cada gancho, le haces un nudo para consolidar, metes cada soga por un agujero de una de las maderas grandes seguido por varios bloques pequeños. Así haces varias veces hasta terminar con algo así: 

Hanging shelves: Install two metal hooks on the wall. Buy some rope and wooden panels in any hardware store. Cut into same-sized shelves. Use the rest of the wood to cut into smaller blocks (don’t have to be the same size). Cut a hole at the end of each shelf and one whole in the middle of each wooden block. At home, loop the rope into each hook and start mounting wooden shelves and blocks until you end up with something like this:

Estante de patineta: Como decimos en Puerto Rico “¡Bueno, bonito y barato!”. Si tienes una patineta vieja que ya no usas, compra dos soportes (grandes para que aguanten el peso de la patineta) y pon la patineta encima utilizándola como estante. 

Skateboard shelf: If you have an old, un-used skateboard then this is your lucky day. Buy a pair of big shelf brackets and just place the skateboard on top. Easy, fun and convenient!
